Trout fishing has resumed in earnest at Lake Cahuilla Veterans Memorial Park.
Since fall 2020, the lake held few fish for two reasons. First, a bacterial infection hit trout stocks in the Southwest. Then, restocking could only resume after Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) and the U.S. Bureau of Management successfully negotiated a year-lease with the County of Riverside.
The 135-acre lake is the terminus of the Coachella branch of the All American Canal. Since it provides water service to farms in the East Valley, anyone fishing must take precautions to avoid introducing quagga invasive species into the lake. Staff inspects bait buckets to make sure they are safe and dry. Any bait brought into the park must be in unopened and unused containers. You can buy bait at the lake.
You may fish from the shoreline only, no boats, waders, or fishing float tubes. Bring an ice chest, you cannon clean fish in or near the lake. Catch limit is five trout
A valid State fishing permit is required for any one age 16 or older.
Trout will be stocked Feb. 16, 23 and March 2, 9, 16 and 23. Summer stocking with catfish follows with a catch limit of 10.
