CVWD construction roundup: Even in the heat, the work continues

Posted on July 30, 2020 at 3:26 PM by Diane Carmony

CVWD continues to work on multiple projects to ensure the reliability of water services throughout the Coachella Valley. Here are just a few that may be of interest.

Sun City Water Main Replacement: This is the first phase of a multi-year project to replace 44 miles of ductile iron pipes in the Sun City Palm Desert community that have been damaged by corrosive soil. To date, the contractor has installed and tested approximately 11,800  linear feet of 18-inch, 12-inch, and 8-inch diameter water mains. Earlier this month, the service  for 205 residences was switched over from the old mainline to the new one.  Paving efforts for this phase are scheduled to begin by early August 2020. The CVWD Board of Directors recently approved hiring a contractor for the next phase of the project.

Traffic impacts: There are some road closures and detours in Sun City palm Desert. These are detailed weekly at www.cvwd.org/suncity
Water service disruptions: The project requires short water shut-offs when service is moved to the new pipeline. These interruptions only last a few hours and residents re notified in advance.

Reservoir Safety Upgrades: This project involved surveying 57 reservoirs and installing safety climbing apparatus as needed. All work has been completed.

Stormwater: Construction is underway on the west bank of the Coachella Valley Stormwater Channel and Fillmore Irrigation Ditch Outfall project located adjacent to Wastewater Reclamation Plant No. 4 (WRP 4) facility between Avenue 62 and Avenue 64.  The constructed improvements will provide the WRP 4 site protection from regional floods and associated erosion and scour. Construction is expected to be complete in December 2020.
